Since its inception the Internet is continuously changing and evolving. The main communication model of present Internet is human-to-human. The Internet of Things (IoT) can be considered as the future dimension of the Internet that realizes machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. This way, IoT provides connectivity for everyone and everything. The IoT embeds some intelligence in Internet-connected devices to communicate, store and exchange information, take decisions based on the available information and trigger actions and, as a result provide valuable services in a timely manner.

The IoT is getting exponential popularity for academia, industries as well as government sectors where it has immense potential to bring about significant personal, professional and financial growth.

In essence, the Internet of Things (IoT) provides connectivity for anyone at any time and location to anything at any time and location. With the advancement in technology, we are moving towards a society, where everything and everyone will be connected to communicate with each other, proliferate the useful information and trigger appropriate actions based on the analysis of the available data. The IoT is considered as the future shape of the Internet that realizes machine-to-machine learning.

The basic idea of IoT is to allow autonomous, reliable and secure connections and exchange of data between real world devices and applications. With the recent advancement in Artificial Intelligence (AI) the IoT is now capable to link real life and physical activities with the virtual world. The numbers of disparate Internet connected devices are increasing at a fairly rapid rate. These devices include personal computers, laptops, tablets, smart phones, PDAs, hand-held devices and many more. Several mobile devices embed various sensors and actuators that can sense, perform computation, take intelligent decisions and transmit useful collected information over the Internet.

Using a network of such devices with different sensors and actuators can produce enormous intelligent, self-learning and decision-making applications and services that can bring about marvelous changes in the real life activities. IoT combined with advancement in AI is a remarkable break through in today’s tech-industry.
